Bihar Voluntary Health Association

Brief History

Bihar Voluntary Health Association (BVHA) is a non-profit, non-political and secular organization established in 1969 with an aim to make quality healthcare more accessible to people, especially those living in underserved communities in Bihar and Jharkhand. It was registered in February 1970 under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860 in Patna, Bihar.

In the year 1969, BVHA was founded by renowned visionary leaders and social reformers with a vision of making community health a reality for everyone, with special attention to people who are most in need.

Over the years, BVHA has grown into a network of 100 + Civil Society Organizations and charitable health service providers, along with 200+ associated organizations working across Bihar and Jharkhand. BVHA is also one of the pioneer members of the Voluntary Health Association of India (VHAI).

During the initial phase of the organization, particularly from the 1970s to the 1990s, BVHA focused strongly on strengthening the capacities of staff of charitable hospitals and grassroots CSOs serving people in remote and underserved areas. It also played an important role in disaster relief and emergency response, supporting communities during difficult times.

With changing times and the changing needs of communities, BVHA expanded its work beyond healthcare facilities to include a wide range of community-based programmes. Today, its work covers community health, mobile health services in unserved remote areas and for homeless populations, improving nutrition among women, adolescent girls and children, prevention of anaemia among women and girls, safe drinking water, menstrual hygiene, WASH, communicable and non-communicable diseases, eye health, TB, HIV/AIDS, mental health, telemedicine, promotion of sports, prevention of child marriage, livelihood development initiatives and disaster response.

Alongside direct community programmes, BVHA works to strengthen the capacity of grassroots organizations, healthcare providers and other community stakeholders through training, technical support and knowledge sharing. This helps local organizations respond better to the health and social needs of the communities they serve.
